Materials:
white -30 ounces of worsted weight
black - 14 ounces of worsted weight

The amounts listed in the materials section are approximations.

Crochet Hook: 6.5 mm (K), 5.5 mm (I)
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Size:
Approx: 45" W x 60 L"

Gauge:
Using larger hook 9 sts = 4" and 7 rows = 2"

Abbreviations:
ch: chain
st(s): stitch(es)
RS: right side
WS: wrong side
BLO: back loops only
FLO: front loops only
sl: slip
sc: single crochet

IMPORTANT:
READING THE GRAPH:
Each block on the graph = 2 sc and 2 rows.
Row 1 is shown as the first row and will be read from right to left.
Row 2 is the same as row 1 only read from left to right. So row 1 and 2 are shown as one row on the graph.
Row 3 is shown as the second row on the graph read from right to left.
Row 4 will be the same as row 3 only read from right to left. So row 3 and 4 are shown as one row on the graph.
Continue in this manner for entire graph.

Instructions
Row 1:Using larger hook and medium blue ch 105 sts; sc in second ch from hook and sc in each ch across; ch 1, turn (104 sts) (mark this side as RS)
Row 2- 202: Continue following graph for color changes until a total of 202 rows have been completed. Fasten off.
Edging:

Fig 1:

Use Fig 1 as a guide.

Row 1: Using smaller hook and with RS facing attach white with sl st in first st of side AB ch 1, work 3 sc in same st as joining (counts as first corner), sc in each st across to last st of side AB; work 3 sc in last st (counts as second corner); we will now be working on side BC. There are 202 rows but if we work a sc in each st down this side for the border it will not lay flat so here is the solution….LOOSELY work 135 sts evenly spaced along side BC; To do this work *sc in side of first 2 rows then skip side of next row; repeat from * down side BC; work 3 sc in first st of side CD (counts as third corner); sc in each st across side CD to last st; work 3 sc in last st (counts as fourth corner); LOOSELY work 135 sc evenly spaced up last side of piece (use same instructions as for side BC; join with sl st to first st; DO NOT FASTEN OFF.
Using FLO sl st in each st around making sure to keep tension relaxed enough to avoid pulling. Join with sl st to first st; fasten off.

Rnd 2:With RS facing and using BLO from last rnd and using black and smaller hook sc in each st around making sure to work 2 sc in each center corner st; join with st to first st; DO NOT FASTEN OFF. Using both loops sl st in each st around making sure to keep tension relaxed enough to avoid pulling. Join with sl st to first st; fasten off. Weave in ends.
