Materials:
12 (85 gr balls) of worsted weight burgandy
12 (85 gr balls) of worsted weight white
12 (85 gr balls) of worsted weight gold

hooks: 6 mm (J), 5mm (H)
tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Abbreviations:
ch: chain
st(s): stitch(es) WS: wrong side
BLO: back loops only
FLO: front loops only
sl: slip
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet

Instructions:
Center Strip:

R 1:With larger hook and burgandy ch 5; sl st to first st to form a ring. Ch 3
(counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times;
join with sl st to top of ch-3; sl st to first ch-3 sp; ch 3, turn.
(4 ch-2 sps) (mark as RS row)

We will now be working in rows.

R.2: 2 dc in first ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch sp; ch 3(counts as first dc of next row) turn.
R 3: 3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1, skip next 2 dc, dc in top of ch 3, ch 4 (counts as first dc + ch-1 of next row),
turn.
R 4: repeat row 2
R 5: repeat row 3
R 6: repeat row 2
R.7: repeat row 3
R 8: repeat row 2
R 9:3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1, skip next 2 dc, dc in top of ch 3, fasten off.

We will now be working in rounds.

Rnd 10: With RS facing attach white in any corner ch-1 sp; work
ch 3 (counts as first dc); work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch sp as joining; ch 1;
work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-1 sp; ch 1. skip side
of next dc and work (3 dc, ch 1), in next and each ch space along side of piece
to next corner; work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch sp ; ch 1; work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)
in next corner ch-1 sp; ch 1. Work (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch space along side of piece
to next corner; join to top of first ch-3 with a slip st.
Fasten off.
Rnd 11: Attach white with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as first dc) (dc,ch 2, 2 dc)
in same ch sp as joining; ch 1; *(work 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch sp **; work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)
in next corner ch-1 sp; ch 1.Work (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch space along side of piece to next ch-1 sp; ch 1.Work (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch space along side of piece to next corner; join to top
of first ch-3 with a slip st. Fasten off
Rnd 12: using gold repeat rnd 11 making sure to repeat from * to ** as many times as there
are ch sps along shorter sides
Rnd 13: repeat round 12 using burgandy
Rnd 14: repeat round 12 using white
Rnd 15: repeat round 12 using gold
Rnd 16: repeat round 12 using burgandy
Rnd 17: repeat round 12 using white
Rnd 18: repeat round 12 using gold
Rnd 19: repeat round 12 using burgandy
Rnd 20: repeat round 12 using white
Rnd 21: repeat round 12 using gold
Rnd 22: repeat round 10 using burgandy
Rnd 23: repeat round 10 using white
Rnd 24: repeat round 10 using gold
Repeat rows in this sequence until a total the afghan is the size required. Fasten off.

Edging

(Using Fig 1 as a guide)
Using smaller hook attach burgandy with sl st in any corner sp; ch 1, sc in same st as joining;
work 2 sc in same ch sp. From point A to point B sc in each st and ch-sp across; work 3 sc
in next corner ch sp; work sc in each st and ch-sp across side BC; work 3 sc in next corner
sp; work sc in each st and ch-sp on side CD; work 3 sc in next corner ch sp; work sc in each
st and ch-sp across last side . Join with sl st to first st; DO NOT FASTEN OFF.

Using FLO sl st in each st around. Join with sl st to first st; fasten off.
Working in BLO left from last rnd join white with sl st in any st sc in each
st around.DO NOT FASTEN OFF.
Using both loops sl in first st, ch 1, *(sl st in next st, ch 1); repeat from * around.
Join with sl st to first st. Fasten off.
